BMW is gearing up to start production of their first Neue Klasse model later this year, marking the beginning of a new generation of cars from the German manufacturer. The new electric Vision Driving Experience BMW prototype, a high-performance testbed, demonstrates the manufacturer’s desire to maximize computing power with the “Heart of Joy” central computer hub. According to BMW, this new internally developed “superbrain” integrates control for the drivetrain, braking, energy recuperation, charging, and steering into one unit that processes information 10 times faster than the previous system. Drivers will be able to maintain the vehicle’s trajectory with “greater precision and stability,” whilst having consistent and smooth handling characteristics, which, to us, sounds very much like taking the fun out of the driving experience and cleaning it up digitally. The imperfections of cars and the struggle against the limits of physics create the joy we feel behind the wheel. Conversely, cars will begin to feel the same if every little aspect of the driving experience is controlled with computer precision, as manufacturers chase perfection, not personality. The extra processing power from the new computer will enable BMW to create more efficient electric cars. The company says the computer allows the vehicle to use its energy sustainably, including during energy recuperation. BMW claims that their regenerative braking system on the Vision Driving Experience testbench increases efficiency by up to 25 percent.
