Alpine recently unveiled its first crossover, the A390, hinting at something even more spectacular. Following their appearance at Le Mans, Alpine is looking to challenge Ferrari with a hybrid supercar.
During the media reveal event for the A390, Renault CEO Luca De Meo confirmed to TopGear and other media outlets that Alpine is working on a supercar. TopGear also spoke with Alpine’s head, Philippe Krief, who confirmed that the supercar set to launch in 2028 will feature a 1,000 horsepower hybrid engine, with a V-6 turbocharged engine powering the rear wheels and an electric motor for each front wheel.
“This car has three purposes,” Krief told TopGear. “One is to bring Alpine up. You need a car like this because this car can carry all other cars. Second, it’s an innovation lab, for supercars, then for Alpine, and then for the entire Group (Renault). Third, it will be good business.”
Conceptually, the Alpine hypercar will be similar to what Lamborghini did with the Temerario and Revuelto, and what Ferrari did with the SF90, but with a V-6 engine as a replacement for engines with more cylinders. Alpine plans to launch five new electric models between now and 2030. Next year, they will release an all-electric replacement for the A110.
Ultimately, Alpine will revive the name A310 for a sports car using the same platform as the A110, and the company is also working on something bigger than the A390, which will enter the US market. Currently, Alpine also sells the A290, a cooler version of the Renault 5 hatchback.
Alpine’s motorsport division, Alpine Hypertech, is developing the powertrain for this supercar. The company, founded after Renault ended its Formula 1 engine program, also runs the Alpine World Endurance Championship, among other R&D programs.
Krief also told TopGear that the car will not look like the recent Alpenglow Alpine concept and does not yet have a name. Hopefully, we will soon see it, along with other Alpine products.
