In an effort to boost rural economies and enhance community welfare in villages throughout Indonesia, President Prabowo Subianto has launched the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan (Village/Urban Village Cooperative) Merah Putih initiative. This program symbolizes a new era of village-centered national development, emphasizing the autonomy of local communities in managing their resources. The Senior Advisor at the Presidential Communication Office, Adita Irawati, sees this cooperative as a gateway to economic independence for rural areas, providing them with the freedom to thrive economically.
With basic challenges still prevalent in villages and urban areas nationwide, such as the inability to properly store 90 percent of the fish catch, there is a pressing need for sustainable economic empowerment. Over 5 million micro, small, and medium enterprises are stuck in debt to loan sharks, while many healthcare facilities in villages are lacking. President Prabowo’s launch of 80,081 Kopdes Merah Putih cooperatives aims to address these issues by promoting self-reliant, inclusive, and equitable economies.
These cooperatives play a crucial role in shortening distribution chains and ensuring that essential goods like groceries, medicines, and fertilizers are available to residents at fair prices. Dedi Nurendi, head of the Kopdes Merah Putih in Cileunyi Wetan village, Bandung regency, West Java, emphasizes the positive impact of the program on local residents. By joining cooperatives, communities can support each other and meet their economic needs together. The cooperative model not only fosters entrepreneurship but also encourages mutual cooperation among residents.
